Quand le volcan a disparu, a subsisté un anneau corallien, composé d'îlots - les motu - entourant un lagon. Sur le bord externe de l'atoll, la structure corallienne, appelée barrière, est abrupte et battue par les vagues de l'océan. Sur le bord interne, le vent et la houle ont, par endroits, créé de magnifiques plages. La splendeur de l'atoll cache un monde précaire, aujourd’hui plus que jamais en danger. Ici, la Terre mérite son nom de "planète bleue".

Atolls of Polynesia: The atoll is the trace left by a volcano, a few million years old which began to slowly sink as the water rose. When the volcano disappeared, a coral ring remained, composed of islets (motu) surrounding a lagoon. On the external border of the atoll, the coral structure called barrier is abrupt  and pounded by oceanic waves. On the internal border, the windsand trides have created beautiful beaches. The beauty of the atoll hides a precarious world, today more than ever in danger.
