330 _aMartyr of the islands is the biography of John Coreridge Patteson, first misionary Bishop of Melanesia, who was murdered on the tiny atoll of Nkapu in the Western Pacific in September, 1871. While still a boy at Eton, Patteson was deeply moved by a sermon preached by George Augustus Selwyn, the newlu appointed Bishop of New Zealand, and conceived the wish to become a missionary. Fourteen years later he left his quiet parish in Devon and went with Selwyn to New Zealand. So began the fascinating association betwwen these two very different characters, Selwyn domineering and indefatigable, Patteson gentle and diffident but in his way equally determined....
